River sand has been the traditional choice for construction in Mumbai. It offers excellent workability in concrete and mortar due to its rounded particle shape. However, river sand mining is increasingly regulated, and availability has become inconsistent in recent years.
When buying river sand, check for silt content. Excessive silt reduces concrete strength. You can do a simple field test: put sand in a jar with water, shake it, and let it settle. The silt layer on top should not exceed 3% of the sand volume for concrete work.
Due to river sand shortage in the Mumbai region, many builders now use M-Sand for concrete and P-Sand for plastering as alternatives. These manufactured sands are available year-round and have more consistent quality. Discuss with your engineer if switching from river sand to manufactured sand is appropriate for your project.
