40mm aggregate is used for mass concreting and PCC work where larger aggregate is acceptable. The bigger particle size means less surface area per unit volume, which reduces the cement and water required. This makes 40mm aggregate more economical for large volume pours.
40mm aggregate should not be used in heavily reinforced sections because the large particles may not pass through tight reinforcement spacing. As a rule, the maximum aggregate size should not exceed one-fourth of the minimum dimension of the member or the clear spacing between reinforcement bars.
For residential buildings, 40mm aggregate is commonly used for PCC under footings, ground floor PCC, and compound wall foundations. For all RCC structural elements, 20mm aggregate is the standard choice.
